How to Free Up Storage Space in Windows 11 Safely

When your Windows drive is nearly full, updates and everyday tasks can become harder to manage. Start by finding what is taking up space, then remove only files you understand and no longer need. If the computer contains important data, make sure it is backed up before doing a large cleanup.

1. See what is using storage

Open Settings → System → Storage. Windows groups usage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files and personal files. Give the page time to calculate. This is a safer starting point than downloading a cleanup utility from an unfamiliar website.

2. Review temporary files

Select Temporary files and read the list before selecting anything. Some items can usually be removed, but categories vary. Be careful with Downloads: it may contain files you deliberately saved. Do not select every checkbox automatically. If you are unsure what a category contains, leave it selected for later review rather than deleting it.

3. Check the Recycle Bin and Downloads

Open the Recycle Bin and inspect its contents before emptying it; deleted files may still be recoverable from there. Review your Downloads folder for installers, duplicate files or large items you recognize and no longer need. Avoid deleting documents, photos or work files simply because they are large.

4. Uninstall apps you no longer use

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and review the list. Uninstall only software you recognize and do not need. If an app name is unfamiliar, research it through the official publisher or PC manufacturer before removing it. Do not remove drivers or system components as a storage shortcut.

5. Move personal files carefully

Large videos, photo collections and archives may be candidates to move to an external drive. Copy the files first, verify that the copies open, and only then consider deleting the original if you truly want it removed from the PC. For more detail, see our guide to backing up important files to an external drive.

6. Use Microsoft’s guidance for deeper cleanup

Windows includes additional storage recommendations and cleanup options. Review Microsoft’s official instructions for freeing up drive space before using advanced options. Avoid deleting folders from Windows or Program Files manually.

Good habit: Check storage every so often rather than waiting until the drive is nearly full. Keep at least one independent copy of files you cannot replace.
