How to Make a Windows Laptop Battery Last Longer

If your laptop battery drains faster than expected, start with settings and apps before buying a replacement. Battery life depends on the laptop, battery age, screen brightness, workload, and wireless connections, so results vary.

1. Lower screen brightness

The display can use a noticeable amount of power. Use the keyboard brightness keys or Windows Quick Settings to lower brightness to a comfortable level. If your laptop has adaptive brightness, review whether it suits your environment.

2. Choose a power-saving mode

On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Power & battery and look for Energy saver or related power options. On battery, a power-saving mode may reduce background activity and performance to extend runtime. The exact options depend on your device and Windows version.

3. Find apps using power

Open Settings → System → Power & battery and look for battery usage information if available. Close apps you do not need, especially ones running heavy tasks in the background. Do not disable unfamiliar Windows processes or security tools just to save a small amount of power.

4. Reduce unnecessary connections

Turn off Bluetooth or Wi-Fi only when you do not need them. Disconnect unused USB accessories, especially those that draw power. Airplane mode is useful when you do not need wireless connectivity, but it also disables normal connections.

5. Manage sleep and screen-off settings

In Power & battery, review when the screen turns off and when the laptop sleeps. Shorter idle periods can help conserve power when you step away. Make sure the settings still fit how you use the computer.

6. Check battery health

If runtime has dropped dramatically despite light use, the battery may have aged. Some manufacturers provide a battery-health report or diagnostic tool for the exact model. Use the laptop maker’s official support page and avoid random battery-calibration utilities.

Quick checklist

  • Reduce screen brightness
  • Enable Energy saver when on battery
  • Check battery usage by app
  • Unplug unnecessary accessories
  • Review sleep settings
  • Check battery health if runtime remains unusually short
